Elsie’s main governor is of an unusual cross-arm design. Amongst the many hundreds of engine photographs studied during the research for this book, only two other examples have been found. One was fitted to a 100hp McNaught engine (Works No. 1045) built in 1905 for Miles Ashworth & Co of George Street Mill in Rochdale, while the other – without the protective sleeve around the flyballs – was fitted to a 350hp twin-cylinder engine built in Leicester by Jessop & Sons for Samuel Lomax’s Albert Finishing Works in Radcliffe. Might it have been designed and built in-house by J. & W. McNaught themselves?
